This image was taken in Nunavik, Québec, Canada, 2023

A personal note from the photographer:  Autumn is the time of year when caribou lose the velvet covering their antlers. Some have lost it some time ago, while others still seem to have a firm grip. The males are not yet showing any animosity towards each other. They even travel together, leaving the females, their young and the young males to regroup. A few moments before this image was taken, the male in the background was resting his head on his mate's back, watching us. The rut will begin several weeks after that, while the herd migrates south.
