A personal note from the photographer: Once used to search the skies for Russian aircraft, a radar tower is now home to nesting platforms for black-legged kittiwakes at an airforce base, turned research station on Alaska's Middleton Island. One-way mirrors allow scientists the rare opportunity to conduct controlled experiments on the feeding habits of black-legged kittiwakes, (Rissa tridactyla), 24 hours a day, seven days a week during nesting season. Some families receive fish throughout the day using a feeding tray cut into the wall, while others are left to forage from the sea. Scientists then observe the behavior, parenting success and changes in muscle development between the two groups to look for differences in how the families are faring under changing environmental conditions.
