A personal note from the photographer: The endangered Barbary Macaques are the last wild primates in the Mediterranean basin and remain a poorly known species. Once widespread in Northern Africa, today only a few wild populations survive in the Atlantic Cedar forests of Morocco and Algeria. However, their habitat has been on the decline due to logging, droughts, and plagues. Other threats include wildlife trafficking for pets and, recently, interactions with tourism that can rapidly affect their survival skills in the wild.
