A personal note from the photographer: A humpback whale calf tucked beneath its sleeping mother. You can tell a whale is comfortable around you when it falls asleep. When encountering whales, moving quietly and slowly and keeping a reasonable distance is key. Sometimes, I’ll spend 20 minutes on the edge of visibility before moving closer. With whales, patience pays off.
