A personal note from the photographer: Emperor penguin chicks huddle together to maintain warmth as the harsh katabatic winds rip over the Antarctic continent. As the young penguins grow, adults leave them in groups of chicks called crèches while they head out to the open ocean to forage for fish. Temperatures can reach minus -50 degrees.
