This image was taken in Lake Hornborga nature reserve, Vastergotland, Sweden, 2006.

A personal note from the photographer: This is a location that every year grows in importance. Over the last 35 years, the numbers of crane here has increased from about 1 000 to 30 000 per year. The cranes gather here in April to perform their ritual dances. The crane comeback is yet another stunning rewilding and conservation achievement in Europe. For centuries, these elegant birds were hunted mercilessly. In their breeding grounds, at their wintering grounds in the Mediterranean basin, and during migration to and from there. When crane hunting was banned in the EU, step by step, the cranes came back, to country after country.
