This image was taken in Hornby Island, British Columbia, 2023.

A personal note from the photographer: Each spring, the Pacific Herring make their way to the shallow waters and shores of the BC coast to spawn. The milky blue colour is due to a mix of herring eggs and milt aka sperm. A stunning visual display of love from a very important little fish that is unfortunately in decline.
